Inscale Architects was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to rehabilitate the Marina Building at Shikellamy State Park, which had been taken out of service after repeated flooding from the Susquehanna River. Following partial demolition and stabilization of the remaining structure, the project builds upon the existing framework to create a renewed destination for recreation and community gatherings along the riverfront.
The redesigned facility introduces two distinct functions: an upper-level event space featuring 3,000 square feet of enclosed area and 5,300 square feet of outdoor terrace, and a lower-level rental area with 1,500 square feet of enclosed space and 6,000 square feet of outdoor use area. The event level accommodates up to 91 guests for catered functions, complemented by a mix of covered, trellis-shaded, and open-deck areas that capture panoramic views of the Susquehanna River.
Large expanses of glass frame the riverfront setting, blurring the line between interior and exterior, while a new maintenance storage building and enhanced site circulation improve the overall visitor experience. The result is a resilient, revitalized waterfront venue that celebrates both the natural landscape and community use.
